MTSS, or Multi-Tiered System of Supports, is a framework used to provide targeted support to students.  It is a proactive approach that aims to address the academic, social-emotional, and behavioral needs of every student.  Here is a breakdown of what that means:

Multi-Tiered - This is the system’s structure involving 3-Tiers of support, each increasing in intensity.

  • Tier 1 - This is the foundation, providing high-quality, universal academic, behavioral, and social-emotional instruction and support to all students.

  • Tier 2 - This tier offers targeted interventions for students who need additional support beyond Tier 1.

  • Tier 3 - This provides intensive, individualized interventions for students who are still struggling after receiving Tier 2 support.

System of Supports

  • MTSS is a comprehensive approach that considers the whole child, addressing not just academic needs, but also social-emotional and behavioral well-being.

  • It relies on data-driven decision-making, using assessments and progress monitoring to determine which students need support and how to provide it effectively.

In essence, MTSS aims to create a system where all students receive the support they need to succeed.

Team-Based Approach

Implementing a successful MTSS framework requires collaboration from various teams and individuals within our schools and district.  Here are teams that are vital to the success of our MTSS work:

  • Building Leadership Teams (BLTs) - This team provides overall leadership and guidance for MTSS implementation by looking at school-wide data and setting goals.

  • Professional Learning Communities (PLCs) - These teams meet within grade-levels or content areas to create and monitor goals related to research-based practices in the classroom

  • Tier 2/3 Intervention Teams - This team identifies students needing advanced tier support, develops plans, monitors student progress, and analyzes data.  Personnel providing direct specialized services are part of the team including Title 1 teachers, social workers, special education teachers,  counselors, at-risk liaisons, behavior specialists, student success coordinators, administrators, and the MTSS Coordinator.

  • MICIP/IAC Committee - Our district-level Continuous Improvement Team and Instructional Advisory Committee members also serve on school-level teams to ensure a consistent level of communication and information sharing throughout the district.
